Chief Scouts Eulogy

Chief Scout, Michael John Shinnick gave the Eulogy for Joseph Lawlor former Chief Scout of Scouting Ireland CSI....

I am honoured as Chief Scout of Scouting Ireland, to pay tribute in this eulogy to Joe Lawlor, former Chief Scout of Scouting Ireland CSI and a devoted and committed scouter throughout his lifetime.

Joe first started scouting in Baldoyle, and also worked for a brief period in the Scout shop in Dublin City. It was through scouting that he met his devoted wife of 38 years, Mary, when they met at a Scouting and Guiding event.

Joe had a very distinguished career in the higher echelons of Scouting. He held many Senior Positions in the Association and was elected as National Commissioner in the 1970s. He then became Chief Scout of the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland for the first time in 1980 and was re-elected for a further 3 years in 1983. He subsequently was re-elected as Chief Scout two more terms from 1992 to 1998, a feat that will probably never again be repeated in the hierarchy of Scouting in Ireland.

He oversaw many changes and initiatives during his tenures as Chief Scout in Scouting. He was particularly associated with the introduction and the continuation of the Annual Scout Show, which is held around Easter time. In 1997, when approached about the possibility of having a campsite in Castlesanderson, on the Cavan-Fermanagh border, he had the vision and foresight to see its potential and was an enthusiastic and committed supporter of the project and was further very proactive in fundraising, both at home and in the United States of America.

Updated Advice on Swine Flu

Scouting Ireland - Updated Advice on Swine Flu

Given the recent increase in reported cases in Ireland, it was felt to be important to draw your attention to the HSE advice on Swine Flu....

As Scouting Ireland commences the new Scouting season the following advice is based on information taken from both of the relevant HSE and Directgov websites.

Scouting Ireland have issued the following update and advice to all its members at this time, periodically and where necessary such information will be updated and re -issued.

The following advice is based on information taken from both of the relevant Health Service Executive (HSE) and National Health Service (NHS)/Directgov offices including their respective websites.

Scouting

Activities should continue, or resume as normal but Scouters and Scouts should be and remain vigilant both about their own health and that of others, in keeping with the Scout Law and Promise.

Symptoms

The symptoms of swine flu are broadly the same as those of ordinary flu but may be more severe. The typical symptoms are:

· sudden fever

· sudden cough

Other symptoms may include:

· headache

· tiredness

· chills

· aching muscles

· limb or joint pain

· diarrhoea or stomach upset

· sore throat

· runny nose

· sneezing

· loss of appetite

Any Scouter or Scout with flu-like symptoms should be advised to contact their own GP and seek treatment. If the Group is away (eg: weekend camp/hostelling, etc…) then the local medical practitioner can advise the Group and if necessary arrangements should be made to return the Scouter/Scout to their home.

It is advised that anyone affected by Swine Flu should absence themselves from activities for a period of at least seven days, from the onset of their symptoms.

Precautions

Brief and advise everyone to:

· Catch It - Cover their mouth when coughing or sneezing (preferably with a tissue)

· Bin It - Throw used tissues away quickly into bins (these bins should be emptied on a

regular basis)
